Spring Home Preparedness: Protecting Your Home (and Wallet) as the Seasons Change

Spring is finally peeking around the corner, and we’re all eager for warmer days, melting snow and spring showers. While the change in season certainly shows us the beauty of our part of the world, it can also bring unexpected headaches—especially when it comes to home maintenance and insurance.

As someone who’s spent over 35 years helping people protect what matters most, I know that a little preparation now can save you from costly repairs (and insurance claims) later.

Let’s talk about a few easy ways to get your home spring-ready—and, of course, how to make sure your insurance policy has you covered.

When's the last time you reviewed your homeowners insurance policy?

Before you start planning your spring landscaping or porch refresh, take a few minutes to review your homeowners insurance. Spring storms, flooding, and water damage are no joke, and the last thing you want is to realize after the fact that something isn’t covered.

Here's why we suggest taking a look...

  • Know what your policy includes – Most standard policies cover things like wind damage and fallen trees, but flood damage? That’s usually a separate policy.

  • Check your coverage limits – Rising material and labor costs mean you might need to adjust your dwelling coverage.

  • Update your home inventory – If you’ve made upgrades or big purchases (new furniture, appliances, etc.), make sure they’re reflected in your policy.

If you’re unsure whether you have the right protection in place, let’s chat—I’m happy to help you go through your coverage.

Flood Prevention: Don’t Let Spring Rains Catch You Off Guard

Flooding is one of the biggest risks this time of year, especially with melting snow and heavy rain. Even if you don’t live in a high-risk area, a clogged gutter or poor drainage can lead to water damage in no time.

Here are some easy ways to protect your home:

✅ Clean those gutters – Blocked gutters cause water to back up and seep into your roof or foundation. (It’s gross, but trust me, it’s worth it.)

✅ Check your sump pump – If you have a basement, make sure your sump pump is working before the next big storm. A battery backup is a smart investment.

✅ Seal foundation cracks – Even small cracks can let water in, leading to bigger issues (hello, mold).

✅ Direct water away from your home – Extend your downspouts and if your yard doesn't slope away from your foundation, add that to your spring project list! 😉

With WNY’s spring forecast looking wet and unpredictable, now’s the time to prepare. Need help reviewing your policy? Let’s talk. We’ll make sure you’re covered—so you can enjoy spring stress-free.

Stay dry & be ready!
